This beautiful, traditional stone-built farmhouse, dating back to the 18th century, stands detached within its own mature gardens - with the enclosed rear garden boasting a summer house. Refurbished to a very high standard, the holiday property retains much character and charm, with oak floors and panelled walls. It makes an ideal location for weekend celebrations, those who enjoy walking, cycling, golf, fishing, horse riding or simply relaxing. Etherley Dene Farm is located in Bishop Auckland, which has been the official residence of the bishops of Durham since the 12th century. The town provides many interesting attractions, including Auckland Castle with its splendid marble and limestone chapel and stained-glass windows that relate to stories of early Christian saints. At Bishops Park, an 18th-century deer house survives, and visitors can follow the mile-long lane that leads to the remains of Binchester Roman Fort. Fifteen miles south-west of Bishop Auckland is Barnard Castle. There is also the Bowes Museum to visit, which is housed in a grand French-style chateau and provides a wide collection consisting of furniture, paintings, tapestries and ceramics. NT properties nearby include Warren House Gill, Horden, Beacon Hill, Hawthorne Dene, Moorhouse Woods, Ormesby Hall and Moulton Hall. Local attractions include the new National Railway Museum at Shildon, Hamsterley Forest and Weardale National Park, and Teesdale (15 minutes). High Force and the coast are within a 30-minute drive, whilst Newcastle is within 40 minutes' drive. Durham, with its cathedral, is 20 minutes; the Northumbrian coast and Hadrian's Wall can be reached within an hour, and Leeds 1¼ hours. Shops ½ mile, pub 70 yards.
