Formerly a byre at Longsyke Farm, The Goose Barn was meticulously restored in 2010 to provide beautiful, luxurious self-catering accommodation in the heart of the rugged, unspoilt Northumberland countryside. Overlooking fields, and with a totally private garden for guests, The Goose Barn is the perfect rural retreat, a place to relax and unwind. The barn's beautiful original features, such as flagged floors and exposed beams have been carefully restored. There is every modern convenience, including underfloor heating, and a wood-burning stove; French windows open out onto a secluded terrace where meals can be taken al fresco or a barbecue can be enjoyed. The Farm is a haven for wildlife; its rare upland hay meadows, a botanist's dream, are filled with wild flowers in the summer months; curlews, snipe, owls and redshank are just some of the birds that can be seen in our fields. The Goose Barn is exceptionally secluded for a converted farm building, facing away from the farmhouse itself, giving guests a rare privacy and uninterrupted views: Hadrian's Wall itself is your horizon – you can watch the sun rise and set across its crags.
Cooking and Eating
The painted timber kitchen with solid oak work surfaces is fully equipped – whether you wish to cook a special dinner, prepare an idyllic picnic, or just take it easy and heat up a ready-made meal, everything you need is here. With electric double-oven, gas hob, microwave, full-sized dishwasher and a comprehensive batterie de cuisine, self-catering at The Goose Barn will be a pleasure, never a chore. Seasonal farm produce from our vegetable garden and fresh eggs from our hens are available, as is a careful selection of ready-made meals, prepared in our farmhouse kitchen.
As the carefully designed cooking area is open-plan to the traditional painted farmhouse dining table, to the sitting-room and to the terrace beyond, no one is ever 'stuck in the kitchen' .
Living
A sitting-room that combines traditional rural charm with modern technology. Flooded with light, with a high vaulted ceiling, stone flags and a stunning cast-iron wood-burning stove; equipped with underfloor heating, a 32” flat screen TV, CD-system and a careful selection of games, books and DVDs this is the place to unwind. You can simply enjoy the magnificent views – or curl up on the sofa with a book from our collection, listen to music, play Monopoly with the children or watch your favourite programme on TV.
Sleeping
The romantic main bedroom suite has a magnificent king-size four-poster bed, underfloor heating, solid oak floors, and an en-suite with a large shower, underfloor heating and heated towel-rail. The second bedroom can be made up with twin beds, or as a king-size double, according to guests' preferences. This charming room also has underfloor heating and solid oak floors; there is a beautiful antique chest of drawers for storage. It is next door to the luxurious family bathroom. Both bedrooms have south-facing windows giving dramatic views across open fields to Hadrian's Wall. Both are equipped with luxury bedding and 300 thread-count linen of the highest quality.
Bathroom
The spacious family bathroom has underfloor heating and a beautiful traditional flagstone floor. There is a freestanding claw-foot bath as well as a modern shower, and a heated chrome towel rail. Hand-painted tiles and exquisite White Company linen make the bathroom the perfect place to soak aching muscles after a day spent exploring the many wonderful trails that encircle the farm.
Outside
The Goose Barn offers guests a privacy and seclusion rarely found. It has a large stone-flagged terrace accessed from the living/dining area through the French windows: Facing south and east, overlooked by no-one except curlews, this is the perfect place to dawdle over an al fresco breakfast, or enjoy a barbecue with succulent steaks from Longsyke's Dexter herd. From the terrace, steps lead down to a walled, graveled garden where guests can enjoy the views and the seclusion undisturbed. At the entrance driveway to the barn, there is ample secure parking for two cars.
