Durham Heritage City is only 10 minutes by train from NewcastleGateshead and is truly unique. The sheer amount of historic buildings and beautiful architecture found in such a compact area make it a pleasure to stroll around and explore. It has a tranquil atmosphere untouched by time, with rowing on the River Wear, an annual regatta and relaxing riverside walks.
History is all around, in the quaint street names and winding cobbled lanes, crowned by the majestic cathedral and castle World Heritage Site towering over the rooftops. Durham Cathedral dates back to 1093 and has been described as one of the great architectural experiences of Europe. The Cathedral and Castle can be seen from all over the city, with fantastic views afforded from Palace Green in the city centre and whilst following the glorious riverside walks.
Shopping is a real pleasure in Durham, as the cobbled streets are home to top of the range shops including Van Mildert and Chapmans who specialise in gold, diamond and semi-precious jewellery pieces from across the globe. Take time to sit in the cobbled Market Place and enjoy some of the street entertainment, particularly during July and August.
The surrounding area is filled with fascinating museums and stunning countryside. Take a trip to Barnard Castle to visit the Bowes Museum, home to a fine collection of European fine and decorative art, or head to the multi award-winning Beamish open air museum to experience the harsh realities of life during the 1800's in northern England. The North Pennines is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a perfect place to experience quaint country villages.
