The Official Visitor Information Site for North East England
In North East England we have two world heritage sites barely an hour apart, and both of them are free.
Durham Cathedral stands high above the city of Durham and was described by Bill Bryson as "the planet's best Cathedral." Its sheer size will leave you amazed and make you wonder how they built such an incredible structure over 900 years ago.
Hadrian's Wall will also leave you marvelling at the engineering skills of those from the past as it snakes 73 miles from east to west marking the Northern Frontier of the Roman Empire. Head towards Steel Rigg to see the true majesty of the wall as it climbs up near vertical cliffs to ensure an unbroken line across the northern frontier.
