Regional map

Northumberland’s scenery is steeped in history, from the Roman landmarks of Hadrian’s Wall and its forts to the many castles that testify to our centuries of border battles with Scotland – the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed changed hands 13 times before its final retaking in 1482!

Today voted England’s most tranquil county, Northumberland has some of the most picturesque scenery in the country: long golden beaches crowned by dramatic castles and, inland, peaceful open countryside dotted with welcoming market towns in which to relax and refuel at friendly pubs and coffee shops.

Drive across the causeway to the magical island of Lindisfarne at low tide, or explore the wide valleys and beautiful coastline by walking or cycling.
