Bamburgh

Dramatic views, sandy beaches and landmark castles are the essence of Northumberland's coast -and none are more iconic than the imposing Bamburgh Castle. Poised on a basalt crag against the sea, Bamburgh Castle can be seen for miles around. There are few sights to compare with the wide expanse of the castle and beach at dusk.

The castle is the crowning glory of the long, golden beach with its rolling dunes. A short walk from the beach takes you to Bamburgh’s picturesque village, filled with restaurants and tearooms in which to re-fuel after your day by the sea.

Bamburgh village has an interesting history and was home to Grace Darling, the 22-year-old heroine who risked her life in an open boat to help the survivors of the wrecked SS Forfarshire on 7 September 1838. With her father, she rowed for over a mile through raging seas to reach them. The courage that Grace and her family showed on that day became legendary and you can discover more of her story at the RNLI Grace Darling Museum.

Bamburgh is an ideal base for exploring the whole of the Northumberland coast. With great beaches and villages close by, you can forget about the cares of life amongst some of England's most stunning scenery.
