North East Family Treasures Itinerary

In North East England, there’s a world of wonder around every corner.
At Seven Stories 1, the UK’s only centre dedicated to children’s books, favourite tales come to life. Just ten minutes walk away in Newcastle City Centre is the Great North Museum 2, a recently refurbished venue where visitors come face-to-face with a life size T-Rex! The more recent past comes to life at Beamish 3, a town where North East England in the 1800s and 1900s is recreated, complete with tram rides, coalmines and sweet shops.

Up the coast on the dramatic Farne Islands 5 seals, puffins, birds and butterflies are a real treat for wildlife spotters. At Whitehouse Farm 6 younger kids can get up close to their favourite farmyard animals and even have a go at feeding the pigs! For more exotic creatures, Blue Reef Aquarium 7 features poison dart frogs, graceful rays and even a shark or two…

Alnwick Castle 4 and Garden is such a stunning location it’s been used for a number of films, including Harry Potter. Kids love climbing the wobbly rope bridges to eat lunch in the world’s largest treehouse. Not far away is Bamburgh Beach 9, a stunning stretch of golden dunes and sparkling blue sea. Hartlepool Maritime Experience 11 is the place to find out what life was like for sailors living on that water.  This reconstruction of an 18th century seaport is also home to Britain’s oldest floating warship – the HMS Trincomalee.

Hadrian’s Wall 10 is strewn with fascinating stop-off points but families especially love to join the Roman army at Housesteads or Chesters, dressing up as soldiers to patrol the forts. Another much more recent monument is the Angel of the North 8 whose huge wings stretch out to welcome families looking for a unique photo opportunity.
