The Official Visitor Information Site for North East England
The world looks different from the back of a horse: you can see over walls and hedgerows to far-distant horizons. With riding schools dotted throughout our region, catering for beginners to experts, it’s a perfect way to explore our beautifully varied countryside.
In the south of the region, take it easy on leafy trails through Hamsterley Forest or the bridleways of Deerness Valley in Weardale. Breathe in fresh air on the heather moorland of upper Teesdale and, when you get thirsty, stop at one of the friendly country pubs.
You could venture high into the North Pennines along ancient winding bridleways with stunning views. Or you could enjoy the softer countryside around pretty Blanchland and along the South Tyne valley.
Into Northumberland, there’s a huge variety of landscapes. West of Morpeth, for example, a network of old lanes wanders between quiet villages while the pretty Till valley has the picturesque villages of Ford and Etal. In Kielder Forest there are numerous waymarked trails –choose lakeside, forest, or both!
Head for the Cheviot Hills if you want invigorating climbs and wild, open scenery, particularly around the Breamish and Coquet valleys - though make sure you’re in the company of experienced riders. And what better way to end a day than a gallop along one of our wide, open beaches? Bamburgh even has its own castle to add to the atmosphere!
