The glamour of athletics’ prestigious Diamond League heads to the North East for the first time as many of the world’s finest athletes line up for the Aviva British Grand Prix at the Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday 10 July, just two weeks before the European Championships in Spain.
While the Brits will be fine tuning their performances ahead of the Europeans, some may also be looking to stay in the hunt for the 4 carat diamond on offer as part of the ‘IAAF Diamond Race’. The world’s best will be in Gateshead, will you?

Gateshead International Stadium is signposted from major roads in the area.
From the North - follow the A1 until the turn off for the A184 (Gateshead Town Centre). Keep following the A184 until you come to Gateshead International Stadium on the left hand side.
From the South - follow the A1 until the turn off for the A167 (Gateshead South). You will pass the Angel of the North on your left hand side. Keep going until you come to a large roundabout with a right turn for the A184. Turn right and keep following the A184 until you come to Gateshead International Stadium on the left hand side.
From the West – follow the A69 until you meet the A1. From there follow the directions as from the north.
From the East – follow the A19 until you reach Whitemare Pool roundabout and then turn on to the A184 (Gateshead). Continue on the A184 over Heworth roundabout and Gateshead International Stadium in on the right hand side.
From Newcastle Airport & Newcastle Central Station – follow the A167 North (over the Tyne Bridge) until you reach a roundabout with a left turn onto the A184. Follow the A184 until you come to Gateshead International Stadium on the left hand side.
Do your bit for the environment and take the bus to the British Athletics Grand Prix, taking place at Gateshead International Stadium on Monday, 31 August.
Go North East is running extra buses on its Loop 93 and 94 services to give a bus every 15 minutes to the Stadium from Gateshead Interchange and Heworth Metro. The buses will serve all the usual stops on the route to the Stadium and take just ten minutes to get you to the event. An adult single fare to the event from Gateshead Interchange is just £1 or £1.30 from Heworth. All standard child fares are available and BuzzFare and Get Around tickets can also be used on the services.
