BBC Breakfast viewers voted Yarm as having the UK’s Best High Street, while Barnard Castle is one of the best antiques centres in the north, with amazing collections of furniture, books, silver and jewellery.

Corbridge in the Tyne Valley offers antiques, local crafts and boutique shopping in an historic setting.

Its neighbour Hexham has been named England’s favourite market town by Country Life magazine, whose readers also voted Alnwick in rural Northumberland ‘Best Place in Britain to Live’, Alnwick also has one of the largest and most impressive second-hand bookstores in the country, Barter Books. Where you could literally get lost for a day!

In market towns, all around the region, regular farmers’ markets provide a great opportunity to sample tasty local treats.

Alnwick Market and Hexham Farmer’s Market have been voted among the top 12 in the UK by the Times Online website.  Visit on the 2nd Saturday of the month for Hexham or the last Friday of the month for Alnwick.
