Ratings you can trust

Ratings are generally awarded through VisitBritain (formerly the English Tourist Council), the AA or the RAC using systems based on clearly defined criteria. These standards clearly reflect the type of accommodation being judged and what it offers. Quality of experience, decor, atmosphere and above all service are assessed in addition to the quality of the facilities.

The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation and to both stars and diamonds. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect.

1 star or diamond: Simple, practical, no frills.
2 star or diamond: Well presented and well run.
3 star or diamond: Good level of quality and comfort.
4 star or diamond: Excellent standard throughout.
5 star or diamond: Exceptional with a degree of luxury.

Note: Diamonds only apply to Guest Accommodation and are gradually being replaced by stars during 2006.

We give credit where credit's due and establishments that have excelled are recognised with special gold and silver awards. Look out for them when you're booking your accommodation.

The ratings are designed to help you make an informed choice on where to stay. If, however, you believe that you have cause for complaint, take up the matter immediately with the management of the accommodation. If you are still not satisfied, then put your complaint in writing to the management.
