Road Directions

From the A1 follow A68 to Corbridge, then onto the A689 westwards through Wolsingham, Frosterley, Stanhope, Eastgate and arrive Westgate.

Public Transport Directions

By train to Durham, then bus to Bishop Auckland, change for Stanhope and again for Westgate, service 101.

  • Of historic, literary or architectural interest - Built around 1850, the cottages would likely have housed lead-mining families. The cottage was originally two separate 'one up one down' houses. Each would have had a cast iron range in the chimney breast, where a fire would provide the means to heat water for cooking, bathing and laundry. We have restored both chimneys for use with coal and wood, and installed a Rayburn in the dining room chimney alcove. There are many original features, including fireplaces in all rooms, built in 'presses', wood panelling and stone flagged floors. In the dining room you can still see a ceiling hook that would have been used to hang up cured meat such as ham or bacon.
