South Tyne Trail to Lambley Viaduct

This pleasant green and leafy route follows the former Haltwhistle to Alston railway line. Along the way you can see old station houses, platforms, tunnels and bridges - the most impressive of all being the 110 feet Lambley Viaduct, offering fantastic views of the wooded valley. The small market town of Haltwhistle, with its charming stone houses and close proximity to Hadrian's Wall, is also well worth a visit.

Start at Haltwhistle Railway Station. Turn right out of the station car park onto the main road then right again under the railway. Cross the river via the 'Blue Bridge' and turn right.

Follow the road as it passes under the A69 alongside the River South Tyne then turn left to join a path alongside the A69 (National Cycle Network Route 68 signs).

Turn right (signed 'Plenmeller'), then right through a gate onto the South Tyne Trail railway path.
Continue on the track crossing the road at Park Village and again at Featherstone Station. Leave the route here for the pub (turn left), or continue straight ahead to Coanwood.

Cross the road after Coanwood car park and continue along the track until you reach the landmark Lambley Viaduct.

Retrace your route as far as the Featherstone Station car park road crossing and pub. From here you can either retrace your route along the track (advised if cycling with younger children), or turn left on the minor road to follow the alternative road route (downhill past Featherstone Castle, along the river, uphill then left at T-Junction then downhill to join the original route at the A69 underpass). Retrace your route to Haltwhistle.
