Theatre Royal - Graeme Peacock

The Theatre Royal is one of only nine Grade I Listed theatres in England and is regarded by many as the UK’s finest theatre building. Since it's opening in February 1837 it has been renovated many times, and following a major fire after a performance of Macbeth in 1899, the entire auditorium was re-designed by one of the world’s greatest theatre architects, Frank Matcham.

In September 2011 a major, £5 million, six-month restoration was completed to recreate Matcham’s classic 1901 Edwardian design. Using Matcham’s 1901 template for the decorative scheme, the original wallpaper has been reprinted, lost tilework reinstated, original fixtures and fittings replaced and original designs faithfully recreated, encorporating truly amazing levels of luxury and astonishing amounts of gold leaf. Specialist workshops reproduced period light fittings, brassware and ornamentation and seating was reconfigured, with new seats in all areas – 1901 in style, but modern in comfort.

Theatre Royal remains one of the most historic, cultural landmarks in the country and continues to dominate the heart of Newcastle’s Grainger Town. The Theatre Royal is one of the most famous theatres in the country and in its colourful history has played host to the biggest names in dance, drama, music and comedy.

The Theatre Royal presents over 380 performances to over 300,000 people each year and is the regional home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Opera North and Rambert Dance Company. Its status and reputation as one of the finest theatres in the UK ensures it is a key date in the touring calendar of some of the world’s leading theatre companies; performances include the biggest and brightest West End musicals, thought provoking drama from the world’s leading playwrights, contemporary dance from internationally acclaimed choreographers - not to mention the North’s favourite pantomime, attracting more than 70,000 people.

It is the Theatre Royal’s aim to deliver performances that will inspire, challenge and above all entertain.
