The railway is an extension of the world famous Stockton and Darlington line following the river Wear into the North Pennines. Re-opened in July 2004 the Weardale Railway provides a 5.25 mile ride between Wolsingham, the gateway to the dale via Frosterley to the historic market town of Stanhope in beautiful Weardale. Subject to availability you will be steam hauled in 1950's coaches at a leisurely pace beside the river with magnificent views of the dale, part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Railway plays host to a varied programme of special events throughout the summer, from a 1940's weekend to an historic commercial vehicle rally, and events on Mother's and Father's Days. Over the Christmas festive season Santa Specials provide the focus of the winter service along with holiday services between Christmas and New Year.
