Explore 45 hectares of wetland, woodland and wildlife reserve at WWT Washington Wetland Centre - one of the North East’s biggest conservation success stories.

Set on the banks of the River Wear, our vibrant and fascinating site is home to exotic birds, amazing insects, beautiful wild scenery and so much more!

Recent developments include a stream channel, exciting new wildfowl habitats and Close Encounters feeding area - bringing visitors nose to beak with some of the rarest water birds on earth.

Don’t miss the largest nesting colony of Grey Herons in the region at Wader Lake; Bullfinches and Great-spotted Woodpeckers in Hawthorn Wood, the ancient woodland at Spring Gill or our amphibian ponds.

Plus Meg, Molasses and Cleo - our trio of friendly goats – a breeding colony of pink Chilean Flamingos and tiny ducklings taking their first wobbly steps at Waterfowl Nursery (May-July).

Picnic areas, Waterside Café with sun terrace and BBQ, gift shop, Discovery Centre and Splash Zone adventure play area. Excellent disabled access and free wheelchair hire.

Get close to nature and learn the value of the UK’s diverse wetlands, their rich wildlife and the importance of WWT’s conservation programmes.

Open 364 days a year. WWT members get in free. Registered charity no. 1030884.
