BARTER BOOKS is located in a listed Victorian railway station within 5 minutes' walk of both the Alnwick Garden and the town centre. As one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain, Barter Books has also become one of the top three tourist attractions in Alnwick, along with Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Garden.

The Station Buffet serves a variety of home-made hot and cold food, including scones, soup, sandwiches, bacon butties, sausage sarnies, cupcakes and cakes, as well as various coffees (cappuccino, latte, espresso), tea, wine and cold drinks.
Within Barter Books are three murals commissioned by the owners between 1999 and 2006:
the Famous Writers mural by Peter Dodd (included as one of the treasures in Michael McNay’s book, Hidden Treasures of England),
the Railway Mural (includes the names of almost 450 Station staff from the branch line opening in1850 to its closure in 1968) and
the Tennyson Installation (based on an installation by Mark Handforth and adapted for Barter Books by Colin Rose.)
